Dogs in the cold season

A Lithuanian winter is not dangerous for a dog if you know a few things.

Paws and salt

Road salt and grit dry out and crack paw pads. Rinse the paws with warm water after a walk and dry them; in hard frost a protective balm before going out helps.

Who needs a coat

Short-haired, small, old and thin dogs are better off with a jumper or jacket in severe cold. Dogs with thick coats usually do not need clothes.

Ice on lakes and rivers

A dog does not know the ice is thin. Keep it on a lead near lakes and rivers in winter, and if it falls through, do not follow it onto the ice – call 112.

Dark evenings

A reflector on the collar or a glowing tag helps drivers see the dog in time. A long retractable lead in the dark is not the best idea.

Antifreeze

Car coolant tastes sweet, so dogs happily lick it, and it is highly poisonous. If you see a puddle in a yard or garage, steer the dog away from it.
